Reading Review Summaries: Samples, Sources and Editorial Judgment
A short summary can lose dates, qualifications, and disagreement. Start with what was examined before deciding what the summary can establish.
Start with the sample
Look for the sources actually examined, the date range, and the handling of duplicates. A subset of public comments cannot represent every user. The platform’s total review count is not the number the editor read.
Repetition is not independence
Repeated posts by one person, copied text, and summaries of summaries can make one opinion look corroborated. If independence is unknown, state that limit instead of reporting a percentage or a consensus.
Separate three kinds of text
An excerpt should match the source. A translation should be labeled. An editorial summary is the site’s account, not a quotation. The reader should also be able to distinguish the writer’s opinion from facts checked against another source.
Rewording does not settle reuse rights
We do not treat AI rewriting, shortening, or translation as automatic permission to reuse material. Original text, translations, and summaries need their own source and scope checks. Attribution is not a substitute. This describes our editorial standard, not a legal determination about a particular use.

Two dates, different meanings
A library article gets a typo correction on 10 September. Its opening hours were last checked on 20 August.
The hours were not necessarily rechecked in September. Editing and evidence have separate dates.

Three articles, one source
Three blogs say a hall holds 200 people. All cite one old leaflet that says ‘up to 200 in a standing layout.’
These are not three independent checks. A summary or translation must retain the layout and upper-limit qualifications.
