A practical pre-arrival check for the details that most often cause trouble on day one: mobile data, airport transport, cards and cash, and late check-in.
Check your phone before buying a SIM or eSIM
JNTO outlines airport Wi-Fi, pocket Wi-Fi, and SIM options. Before buying, check that your phone is unlocked and supports the network or eSIM. A data-only eSIM may not provide a Japanese phone number, voice calls, or SMS, so it cannot satisfy a booking process that specifically requires a local number.
Plan airport transport from your actual arrival time
Keep a backup route rather than saving only one journey. Immigration, baggage collection, and transfers take time, and late services may be less frequent. Use the airport’s official access page to check rail, bus, and taxi options, and retain an option that does not depend on the final train. Timetables, fares, and luggage rules should be rechecked with the operator.
Use cards, but keep some cash
Cards are widely accepted at major hotels, transport operators, and chains, but not universally at small businesses, ticket machines, or pay-on-arrival counters. Use a card as your main method while carrying cash and a rechargeable transport IC card. Overseas mobile wallets may not work at every terminal, so ask before relying on one method.
For late check-in, save the deadline and contact method
Before booking, check the final check-in time, any unattended-entry procedure, identity-document requirements, and what happens if you do not contact the property. If a flight is delayed, use the property’s published contact channel early. A booking platform summary may omit conditions; rely on the property’s confirmation and your booking terms.
Keep the first evening deliberately light
On a late arrival day, avoid chaining plans across several districts. Check in, charge your phone, and arrange cash first, then confirm opening hours, the meeting point, and the return route. A Japanese listing that says 25:00 generally means 01:00 the next calendar day as an extension of the previous business day.
