Lost Property in Tokyo: What to Record and Who to Ask
Record the time, route, distinguishing features, and enquiries already made. Lost-property enquiries, visitor assistance, and emergency calls serve different purposes.
Start with station staff after a rail journey
Tokyo Metro directs same-day enquiries to the nearest station office; JR East also advises contacting station staff. Identify the operator where possible. A journey spanning multiple operators does not mean every office has received the same item.
Make one short record
Mark uncertain details as unknown rather than guessing. Keep the record private; do not post identity numbers, card numbers, or your full itinerary publicly.

| Field | Useful detail |
|---|---|
| Time and route | Date, approximate time, boarding and alighting stations, direction. |
| Likely location | Carriage, seat area, rack, or station location; mark uncertainty. |
| Distinctive features | Colour, size, material, attachments, or wear, without sensitive contents. |
| Previous enquiries | Time contacted, reference number, response, and next step. |
Confirm collection details before travelling
Tokyo Metro publishes identification requirements for collection and procedures for someone collecting on your behalf. Check the operator’s current location and instructions before travelling. Do not send an identity document to an unsolicited personal account claiming to be staff.
Keep lost-property enquiries separate from emergencies
In Japan, call 110 for urgent police help and 119 for fire or ambulance. JNTO’s Japan Visitor Hotline, 050-3816-2787, offers English, Chinese, and Korean assistance around the clock. Visitor assistance does not replace an emergency call; ordinary lost-property enquiries belong with the relevant lost-property service.
